School Visits

Ever wondered how authors get their ideas? Or how kids can use research to add depth to their own stories? Or maybe you’d just like to hear the most fearsome pirate voices this side of the Caribbean?

My funny and inspiring author talks are guaranteed to get kids excited about reading and writing. Here are just a few of the topics I can cover:

  • How I became an author
  • Coming up with ideas for stories
  • Handy hints for improving your writing
  • What life was like in the Great Depression (based around my historical novel Tough Times)
  • Tracing the past with research
  • Planning your own pirate feast
  • How writing gives you superpowers

I tailor talks to all primary school levels (grades Foundation–6) and also offer hands-on writing workshops.

‘We recently had Simon Mitchell at Burke Hall and he was fantastic. He was very well organised, planned all the workshops with detail and in accordance with our requests. He worked well with the students and gave them some great strategies on how to write with detail and description.’
– Teacher, Xavier College Burke Hall

‘If you have the opportunity to take your children to an event starring Simon, make sure you do, he is most entertaining and his books worthy of gracing any child’s bookshelf.’
Word Farm Australia

‘Simon Mitchell, our visiting author during Book Week was fabulous. He really entertained, informed and encouraged the students with their own writing.’
